The KitKat Club at the Playhouse Theatre

Atelier One provided structural advice and design throughout the entire development of the renovation and show, from feasibility and concept development to opening night. We were involved in the alterations to the existing building including various structural modifications, re-tiering the auditorium and threading a new balcony structure through the existing sub-stage structure without modifying the sub-stage structure. We also carried out a full rigging load capacity assessment, providing reinforcement solutions where necessary.

The Playhouse renovation demonstrates how an existing listed building can be revitalised, improving the overall function of the structure with carefully designed and coordinated interventions. These interventions would not have been possible without extensive investigation to understand the existing structural arrangement, including accessing previous undiscovered voids within the theatre and close collaboration both within the design team and with the contractor team on site.
